Attendants at the scene examined Mercy's heart and found it full of fresh blood. They built a fire on a nearby rock and reduced the heart to ashes, which they then gave to Edwin to drink in water. Unfortunately, Edwin was too far gone to survive, and he died in May of 1892. But the family story relates that Edwin was the last in the family to perish from consumption.
